Alanna Miller is pleased to announce Magenta Disco, a solo exhibition of works by Hattie Smith Lindsley, opening March 2, 2023 from 6-9 pm.

Living and working in Brooklyn, New York, Hattie Smith Lindsley takes inspiration from her Texan upbringing. Shades of ochre, purple, light blue, and green are staples in Lindsley’s color palette, mimicking hues of the horizon and passing cloud coverage. Her compositions wander and roam, dance, and disco.

Quick brushstrokes swirl in oil across canvas like the whipping southern wind. Compositions are punctuated by the occasional buildup of white paint, creating her signature Hill Country impasto. Lindsley imbues her large-scale abstract canvasses with the natural beauty and mystique of the vast American West.

Having studied landscape architecture and design, Hattie Smith Lindsley is painting in response to the desert and its unending possibility. Her keen sense of depth and movement combine with rich and gestural paint application to create a dynamic canvas, recalling the tremendous legacy of female abstract painters who came before her.

About the Artist

Texan artist Hattie Smith Lindsley lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Hattie Smith Lindsley develops her oil paintings with a revolving eye and rhythmic decision-making. She seeks canvases that are dueling and dynamic and her fluid layers convey the familiar and the foreign. While painting, she constantly rotates the canvas until each piece resonates. She uses white space and raw canvas to maintain an exciting balance of energy in her work.

Smith Lindsley colorful large-scale paintings are charged with the natural beauty of the American West. Smith Lindsley’s keen sense of depth and movement is set against rich and full impasto, creating a dynamic and mutable canvas.

Smith Lindsley received a minor in Fine Arts at The University of Puget Sound and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. She has had solo shows across Texas and in New Orleans at Lea Lou Co-Op Gallery, OLA Gallery, Austin Bouldering Project, and No.77 Hotel and Chandlery.
